RECOLLECTIONS OF SHEILA FAIRBAIRN

Sheila Fairbairn (grandniece) remembers William and Janet visiting her house when she was young in the early 1930s. William was apparently rather bad-tempered and did not get on well with some of his other relations. Sheila describes him as a typical fiery Irishman.

William and Janet would visit Sheila's parents' house at the 'Appin' (Muir Road, Townhill) on Sunday afternoons. Sheila remembers her mother and father trying to get rid of them by saying they were just about to go out for a walk - but William and Janet just tagged along anyway.

On another occassion Sheila remembers William sitting at the table with her father in her parents' house. They were drawing lines on the table and having a very fierce argument.

Sheila's mother (Annabelle) visited William and Janet at their house on Campbell Street, Dunfermline just before Janet died. Apparently Janet was lying in bed and asked William to turn down the gas light because it was hurting her eyes. William disagreed that it was too bright and refused to turn it down despite Janet asking him again. Annabelle had to leave before they concluded their argument because Sheila was not very well at home. Minutes later Janet died and William ran out to try and call Annabelle back, but she was already out of sight.

These impressions do not cast William in a good light. Although they are almost certainly reasonably accurate, we should probably remember that the times were different from our own and that relationships between husbands and wives were more patriarchal. ⁷

Comment basd on discussion with Sheila Fairbairn: This was probably the home of his daughter (Jane) and son-in-law (David Anderson). David Anderson is recorded as the informant on William's death record. The Andersons lived in Crossford.

However, if he was born on 20 July 1858 he was not quite 80 when he died. It is likely that that he was born on 20 July 1858 but that his exact date of birth was no known when he died.
