John Hume Purves ¹

  General Notes:

John was know locally as Jocky Hume. As the story is told, his mother Mary Burgon ( a well known local Eyemouth family) fell pregnant whilst in service to the 13th Earl of Home, Archibald Charles Cospatrick. It was said that one of his sons was responsible for her condition. His mother was then married to John Purves by arrangement and payment. It is also said that she went on to have another child in similar circumstances. The official records vary from this and the connection is slightly dubious.

John married Agnes Fairbairn, daughter of Thomas Fairbairn and Sarah Anderson, on 2 Jan 1900 in Eyemouth. (Agnes Fairbairn was born on 24 Feb 1879 in Eyemouth and died about 1959.)
