Mr. Fairbairn was a well-known local fi 1 CONC sherman and was a member of the crew of one of the two rema 1 CONC ining fishing boats at the Cove. 1 CONT His father was one of the village's ten survivors in the 18 1 CONC 81 disaster. Particularly fond of young people 1 CONC , he taught many the art of sailing small boats and of catc 1 CONC hing shell and other fish. An expert maker of lobster an 1 CONC d crab "creels" he also made cane and willow baskets for fi 1 CONC shing and farming purposes. In his younger days he was a k 1 CONC een athelete and, not so many years ago, took part in his f 1 CONC avourite race at the local sports. During the last war h 1 CONC e was an auxillary coastguard and served at the watch-hous 1 CONC e at Siccar Point. Of a cheerful disposition, he will be e 1 CONC specially remembered by the many holidaymakers who visite 1 CONC d Cove and found in him a most helpful friend and guide.
